Should I join a trade exchange if my new business has very little expendable income?

Answer: It largely depends on your business type. If your new business is in the service industry (carpet cleaner, pest control, or tree trimmer, etc.), I would encourage you to join a good trade exchange for a variety of reasons.

First, new customers will call. The cash expense for a business owner to make a service call on barter (if he or she does it himself), is simply the gas expense to get there plus equipment wear and tear. Consequently, very little cash has been expended for valuable barter dollars that can be used for advertising to bring in cash customers, printing, or other necessary business items necessary for success.

However, if your new business is product based (such as computer sales, building materials, etc.), you should be extremely cautious about joining an exchange. Until cash flow can be predicted, it would probably be a good idea to wait at least 8-12 months before joining.

The reason is simple. Any barter sale will take a product out of your inventory that has cost a healthy percentage of cash. If your cash flow is marginal due to a low sales level, you should likely wait until your cash flow increases to allow you more creativity on the buying end. Always remember that bartering should be used as a SUPPLEMENTAL tool to extend your buying power! You must have a certain level of cash flow to benefit wisely!

As we continue to build MerchanTrade, Inc. into an exchange where more and more members are able to meet their everyday needs through barter, we often get approached by members who are concerned about other local exchanges using our new member and special deals information to profit in their own exchanges.

We appreciate our members’ genuine concern regarding our welfare, but we feel that for the most part, time devoted to preventing certain folks from seeing this type of information is usually wasted time. There are always those in any exchange who will gladly make any information available to competitors for personal gain.

Consequently, we choose not to worry about this sharing process. Our focus at MerchanTrade is more on educating members about what to expect from our competitors so they can make good decisions regarding participation in any exchange.

First, when prospects are approached by any exchange, they should first verify the spending options available in the areas that best benefit them - whether they are local or national. This is very important because many exchanges can send you business, but it’s the VALUE of what you receive that usually separates exchanges. Do your homework when it comes to spending options because you just may wind up with quite a few trade dollars but very few viable options on which to spend them.

Second, assess the trade dollar value within your spending options. If you receive cash comparable prices for what you choose to buy, and the trade price options are twice the cash price consistently, beware of participating! Ultimately, you may find that the fees paid to the exchange plus the cash cost of your barter sales may not be savings at all - and are in fact costing you cash in many instances! Don’t be fooled by the promise of business by this type of exchange!!

Finally, resist the temptation to be a part of any exchange which predominately makes one time deals or if the information they have gleaned from others is the source of their information to you. These exchanges are more concerned about the fees to which they are “entitled” rather than your welfare! Look carefully at information received from these exchanges so you can make an educated decision! Is the information provided to you in such a way that the sender is aware of the product and service value, or are they primarily just forwarding information?

Remember, it takes work to make certain that the deals and businesses you see repeatedly in the weekly email and website are real deals on a consistent basis - and backed by real relationships. My love of photography began in college when I took a photography class as a prerequisite for my advertising degree. The challenge of creating the picture that I saw in my head and capturing it on film was addicting.

I entered a few of my pictures into a national contest sponsored by Nikon. I was not expecting to win but was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had been selected as one of the top 2% of photographers who had entered. My photo was published nationally in the "Best of College Photography" hardbound publication. This fueled my interest in the art and I continued to shoot pictures throughout college and beyond.

Today, I shoot mostly weddings.  I like weddings because it's a day when people are trying to be their best.  They get all dressed up and go through a ritual that is very familiar yet so hard to pull off.  There is a lot of stress in shooting a wedding but I love it.  It's fast paced and crazy and therein lies the fun.  My Bride and Groom are on an eight hour roller coaster ride that goes by in a blur and my job is to capture the moments.  When it's all said and done, we're all exhausted but their memories are firmly tucked away inside my cameras.

I now have hundreds of weddings under my belt ranging from very simple affairs to my first celebrity wedding in 2010.  Also in 2010, I was selected as one of the top wedding photographers in Dallas according to The Knot Magazine's "Best of Weddings 2010". I earned that distinction thanks to the many brides in Dallas who voted in the annual wedding magazine's publication.

I'd like to think that I do not need to speak for my photography here; but let my photographs on my website speak for themselves. Legacy Antiques proudly offers a fine selection of 18th Century French antiques, Italian antiques, English antiques and continental antiques. We offer a vast selection of antique chandeliers, antique mirrors, commodes, tables, cabinets, chairs, and decorative furnishings. All of our items are hand picked by us one piece at a time. We frequently travel to France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and all over Europe in search of high quality antiques.

• Your business will be listed in our barter program as a member.
• Your business will be listed on our website & featured on the homepage as a new member.
• Your business will be featured in our weekly email.

How do I start trading?

• Give and you shall receive: Provide a service or product to one of our members to build your barter fund.
• When you're ready to trade, review our trader categories (or call our office at 254 776-5552 or 800 867-5552) & contact members you’re interested in trading with.
• Let them know you’re a MerchanTrade member & start trading!

What if I don’t find anything I can use?

• If you get no benefit, you owe nothing. However we recommend contacting businesses you need & ask them to consider joining MerchanTrade.
• If they sign up, you'll get a $100 cash referral bonus & you'll be able to pay them barter dollars instead of cash.

What do I do when contacted by a MerchanTrade member? 

• Get the member’s card info & let them know your trade terms.
• Once your transaction is complete, contact our office @ This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. & provide the amount, business name or MerchanTrade card #.
• The MerchanTrade office will provide you with an auth. # to verify the purchase that's just been made

OK, I’m starting to love this.  When does the Intro Period end??

• After you receive the first $1000.00 in trade in new business, we will bill a $200.00 cash membership fee and after that has been paid, we credit your trade account $200.00 - nontaxable. How cool is that? You get $200 to apply to your next trade!
• You are issued a membership card w/ your business & personal name, acct # and expiration based upon when you joined.

What fees can I expect?

• 10% cash & 2% trade on any purchase, which is only billed to you after you have benefited by using your trade dollars.

How do I keep up with my balance?

• You will be mailed a monthly statement.

What happens the rest of the year?

• You continue to be promoted in our weekly email, website & receive monthly statements throughout your first year and following.
• There is an annual renewal fee of $150.00 due each calendar year. If you choose to continue and pay this fee, your trade balance, etc. moves to the next year.
• If you choose to close your acct., you simply prepay your cash fee on your balance and spend this down before your renewal date and your membership cards expire. This way, you would not owe your renewal fee, but still benefit by using your accrued trade dollars.
